The biggest 2027 F-150 changes are in the engine bay and the trim lineup. Ford made a new 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 the standard engine and brought the 5.0-liter V8 back to King Ranch and Platinum, so the V8 is now available across the lineup, from XL to Platinum. Ford also added entry-level Tremor and Raptor versions, a first-ever F-150 Carhartt and BlueCruise with Towing, which is available only on the 2027 F-150.

If you commute toward Detroit or Dearborn and tow on weekends, the engine and towing updates are where this model year earns a close look. Below we cover what changed, what Ford left alone and what it has not published yet.

Powertrain

How is the new base engine different?

For 2027, the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 replaces the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 as the standard engine, and it shares the same core architecture as the engine it replaces. Ford's stated payoff is roughly 10 to 11 percent more torque in the rpm range where everyday driving happens. That is the part of the tach you use when merging onto a Metro Detroit freeway or pulling away from a light with a loaded bed.

What Ford has not published is the new engine's horsepower and torque rating.

Key details

Why does the V8's return matter?

The 5.0-liter V8 returns to the King Ranch and Platinum for the first time since 2023, which makes it available across the entire F-150 lineup from XL to Platinum. Ford rates the V8 at 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. For shoppers who want the sound and feel of a V8 along with a King Ranch or Platinum cabin, that removes a compromise the last few model years forced on them.

Here is the full engine menu Ford shows for 2027:

  • 3.0L EcoBoost V6: the new standard engine.
  • 5.0L V8: 400 hp and 410 lb-ft, now available from XL to Platinum.
  • 3.5L EcoBoost V6: 500 lb-ft of torque and the engine behind the 13,500-lb maximum tow rating.
  • 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid: Ford's hybrid option for the half-ton.
  • 5.2L supercharged V8: available on the Raptor.

Ford has not published 2027 output figures for the PowerBoost hybrid or the Raptor's supercharged V8. If you are torn between the V8 and the 3.5-liter EcoBoost, a back-to-back drive with a trailer or a loaded bed tells you more than any spec sheet.

Entry-level Tremor and Raptor: what you give up

One of the more interesting moves this year is a pair of entry-level off-road trucks. Ford says the new Tremor and Raptor choices are meant to make its off-road pickups more accessible. The entry-level Tremor is based on the STX, right down to the STX steering wheel, and it uses manual air conditioning in place of dual-zone climate control.

Our take: if your weekends involve two-tracks and sandy trails up north more than showing off a cabin, that trade-off is easy to live with. Dual-zone climate control is pleasant, but it does not change how a truck climbs or crawls.

The lineup

Meet the first-ever Carhartt edition

New for 2027 is the first-ever F-150 Carhartt, offered on 4x4 XLT Crew Cab models.

Building it on the XLT Crew Cab 4x4 means a roomy back seat for the crew and four-wheel drive for a Michigan winter.

Capability

Towing: the numbers and the fine print

The headline figure is 13,500 lbs of maximum towing. Ford attaches conditions to it: that rating applies to a SuperCrew with the 6.5-foot box and 4x4, fitted with the available 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, the Tow/Haul Package and the optional Max Tow Axle, and only when properly equipped.

Every truck's real rating depends on its cab, box, axle, engine and packages, so confirm the exact configuration with us before you plan a lake trip around a number.

What is BlueCruise with Towing?

BlueCruise with Towing is a new name on the 2027 options list, and Ford says it is available only on the 2027 F-150. Ford also notes that the feature is limited by trailer type, size and weight. On a long highway haul toward a cottage or campground up north, it is worth asking us whether your trailer falls inside those limits, and we can walk you through how the system works.

What Ford has not announced yet

  • Horsepower and torque ratings for the new base V6.
  • EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2027 lineup.
  • Which exterior colors are new or dropped for 2027.
  • When the broader 2027 lineup will reach dealers.
  • Crash-test ratings from IIHS and NHTSA.

Decision guide

Should you buy a 2026 now or wait for the 2027?

The honest answer depends on your timing and on which configuration you actually need.

Wait for the 2027 if you want what is new

Wait for the 2027 if a V8 in a King Ranch or Platinum, the Carhartt edition or BlueCruise with Towing is on your must-have list, because those are new for this model year. Contact us about ordering the configuration you want.

Buy a 2026 if a familiar powertrain suits you

A 2026 can still make sense if you are comfortable with the 2.7-liter base engine or another powertrain you already know. Ask us what 2026 trucks are available in the cab and box size you need.
